ERC welcomes sanctions against two Myanmar military business Conglomerates
Immediate Release
March 27, 2021
The European Rohingya Council (ERC) welcomes the targeted sanctions imposed by the United States and the United Kingdom on 25 March 2021 on the two largest Myanmar military business conglomerates Myanmar Economic Holdings Public Ltd (MEHL) and Myanmar Economic Corporation Ltd (MEC), following the February 1 military coup which accompanies deadly and disproportionate crackdown on peaceful protesters.
For years, Myanmar Military (commonly known as Tatmadaw) has used these companies to misuse the national resources while illicit funds gained through these companies are being used to suppress their own people.
The ERC expresses gratitude to the government of the United States and the United Kingdom. This is a step in the right direction, but more steps need to be done. The ERC also urges the European Union and other peace-loving countries across the world to impose targeted sanctions on Myanmar Tatmadaw and stand in solidarity with the people of Myanmar.
The ERC firmly believes that it is now high time to bring Myanmar Tatmadaw into international justice for committing crimes against humanity against the people of Myanmar and the genocide against Rohingya. The ERC also urges the international community including the United States, the United Kingdom and the European Union to officially recognize Myanmar’s genocide against Rohingya and refer the case to the International Criminal Court (ICC) to punish those responsible for the genocide against Rohingya.
