Conflict between AA and Myanmar Military Escalates; Deaths of Rohingya Civilians in Dramatic Rise

Press Release | January 30, 2024

The European Rohingya Council (ERC) is utterly disturbed and moved by the abominable attacks on the Rohingya villages in Buthidaung Township, Rakhine State amidst the armed conflict between the Arakan Army (AA) and the Myanmar Military that has resulted in the deaths of over twenty Rohingya civilians including a pregnant woman and over a hundred other casualties reported since January 25th, 2024. And it still continues.

The Arakan Army must immediately stop occupying the Rohingya villages and institutions to use them as their battlegrounds and hideouts which lingers the obliteration of innocent civilians and the settlements due to the retaliatory artillery strikes by the Myanmar Military. Apart from that, the mobile network has been cut off and roughly 80% of the inhabitants are in dire need of seeking refuge elsewhere. Furthermore, the injured ones are bereft of adequate medical assistance which has led the scenario to a genuine humanitarian crisis.

On January 23, 2020, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) imposed provisional measures directing Myanmar to prevent all genocidal acts against the Rohingya, to ensure that the military and other security forces do not commit acts of genocide, and to take steps to preserve evidence.

The European Rohingya Council (ERC) denounces the heinous attacks on the innocent civilians and thereby calls upon all the concerned authorities to thoroughly look into the ongoing conflicts and call a halt to all the crimes against humanity without further delay in order to avoid mass killings and casualties. The ERC urges to bring all the perpetrators under international justice and accountability for the ceaseless infringement of the human rights and the provisional measures imposed by the ICJ to prevent the genocidal acts and protect the Rohingya community.

The ERC deeply mourns and prays for the deceased ones as well as the ones that experienced baneful effects as a result of the unrest situation.
